Nicolas Jaar sent us some tracks, after we got hold of him through the Wolf & Lamb crew. We really wanted to put it out, but it already had a home (his new LP) He suggested he send me some music that he had done with a friend of his from Ethiopia, Soul Keita. It's a really varied three track E.P, and I knew at once we had to put it out.
Para(sol) : is house music with a really live and organic flavour. Clicking and Ticking percussion leads to a deep kick, held chords & live drums. Soul Kieta has imparted his roots into Nico's samples. . .
Democracy, I was thirsty : Story telling over live bass, beautiful keys and laid back beats. The more you hear it the more you want to play it. A track that brings smoky basements to mind.
Live at Marcy Motel : To finish off the package, we have a live recording from the legendary Marcy Motel Sessions. You can hear that these boys can bring it to the stage live, as well as doing the business in the studio.
Soul Keita is only 17 years old and resides in his hometown of Addis Ababa. This Ethiopian national considers Mulatu Astatke his spiritual father. He works solely with a dusty 808 and traditional Ethiopian instruments in order to create melancholic folk house. This is his first release.
Nicolas Jaar was born in NY but quickly relocated to Santiago de Chile in the 90's, only to come back to his birthplace as a teenager. Haunted by Mulatu Astatke and Erik Satie, Nico started to make organic electronic music in 2004 at the age of 14. At 17, he made his debut with “The Student EP” on Wolf and Lamb Music with a remix by Seth Troxler who called him " one of the most talented minds dance music is about to see develop". At 18, he continued producing and played live at Club Der Visionaire and Arena in Berlin, at the Marcy in Brooklyn, at Communikey in Colorado and at Mutek in Mexico City. Now 19, studying at Brown University in Rhode Island, Nico has releases coming up on Circus Company, Wolf + Lamb and on his own label, Clown and Sunset of which he is the owner and founder. His full length, entitled "ˆtre" will come out mid 2010 on Circus Company.
